NHS letter for when travelling to Greece

NHS letter for when travelling to Greece?
I am currently on holiday in Greece - I am Greek-, but I live and work in the UK. Is there a letter that I can take from the NHS, to show to the Greek hospital, that will enable me not to pay hospital and doctor charges in Greece? I don't work in Greece and therefore I don't have health insurance. I had to go to the hospital a few days ago and had to pay full price for everything, but since Greece is in the EC, there must be a way that I can get hospital treatment free/cheap, since I pay UK taxes. thank you.

No this does not matter if you are out of the country then you are not entitled to free health care as you are in the UK. You should have sorted out some travel insurance before you left. There was a run of adverts on the TV making people aware of the fact you will not be treated for free in other countries. Travel insurance covers you for hospital fees, damage caused to the hotel in regards to flood/fire/or other acts of god, it also allows you to get help if you become stranded. (dependent on policy)

The cable that u connect to your phone contains 2 wires, they carry current, just enough to light a bulb.

yus u can but will be little even to light one or two leds. i think u should connect a bridge circuit so will gives u a dc voltage and will be a constant as well. but dont try it bcs may be u bring some fault in u r telephone company . and can also effect u r voice signals bcs there is enough power in line to carry u r information. BUY a AAA size 2 rechargeable cells instead of thiss. i hope that will be bitter.

What does Greece have to do with Obama?

It shows the great weakness in Obama's plan for America. Everytime socialism has been tried, it has failed. Greece is just another great example. Isn't it interesting that the IMF has told Greece to privatize its health care system?

Working Visa's, Living and Schooling in Greece

Working Visa's, Living and Schooling in Greece....?
Calling on all Aussies or Western expats who have lived and worked in Greece in the Construction Industry. Was hoping someone could give me some insight into the lifestyle of living as an Expat in Greece. I currently have a close friend with a young family looking to move over near Athens to work on a Large Civil Infrastructure Project. He has a wife and 2 children at schooling age- would like to know what schools you could recommended and if so, why does this school stand out? Because he does not have any links to the UK he has to apply for a Greek working Permit and we have been told this complicates things. -What is involved in the process? -How long does it take? -What prevents you from obtaining this? Any information on the Lifestyles for an expat over there and useful tips for a family are welcomed.

Tell your friend I would only do this if I were getting buckets of money (a crazy amount). The children will have the choice of a couple of private schools which teach in English in the centre of Athens - which may not be convenient for them if they are situated outside Athens (tell us where exactly and we can tell you the distance). Also the schools are incredibly expensive and there are few places so they would have to apply - maybe the company they will be working for will be able to help. Also will accommodation be supplied as renting is also expensive in the Athens area. We had some friends here from Australia last week and they said Greece is really expensive compared to Australia (your friend should keep this in mind.) We own a construction company and believe me it's a very difficult job here - ok, the construction company he will be working for will not be totally Greek (like ours) so situations may be better. I was friends with the British that were involved with the building of the Preveza/Aktio tunnel back in 1998 and I remember the managing director (English) tearing his hair out with the Greek system and the slowness (he had previously been working in Japan - so Greece was a real eye opener) I remember trying to get a residence and work permit in 1990 before EU members were able to live here without papers. It was horrendous - I was in tears they sent me to 5 different offices in and around Kifissia / Marousi - no one spoke English - I ended up throwing a pen at the person behind the desk - all because I wanted to become legal and pay my taxes!!! I ended up staying here illegally! I am 100% positive that the situation has now improved 1000% from then!!!! (PS I now pay all my taxes) I have no idea what applies to Australians getting permits - however it does seem strange to me that the company is not sponsoring him - isn't that the norm? Lifestyle is what you make it and also depends on where you live and what you are used to. In my observations most Australians seem to have a better standard of lifestyle than Greeks. For a Brit the lifestyle will improve a lot in Greece - but for Australians I'm not so sure. Does your friend have any links to Greece? I believe it would be a good idea to do this if 1, Great salary 2. Accommodation provided 3. Private health insurance 4. Schooling fees paid 5. Sponsored for work/ residence permit or if I were alone (which he's not) and wanted an experience.

Working in Greece

Working in Greece?
What is the minimum wage to work in Greece? How can you live there with such low wages and economic turmoil? How come in some jobs ther I have been to they don't even ask you for an interview before working for someone? I am greek too, I was born in the U.S., and I was there six months and looked for a job, I applied to a simple grocery store in Athens, and the hiring manager insulted me, saying" Why did you come here to work, why can't you go back where you came from?!" Do you know how bad I felt? I mean, its like your own country says there is no room for you here! I felt ashamed that I was greek that moment. Or maybe the hiring manager did not like be even though I am greek, but b/c I was American. Can you believe that? What is your opinion? Can anyone help me please? Anybody!!!!!!!!!

Yes, it will most likely work if you have the proper power adapter for Greece. However, your system would still be region-locked for the US so you probably won't want to buy any games while you're there.

Yes. If you have the right adapter, different places will need different adapters, you will be able to play it. But games there will be for that country so do not plan on buying any games there.

I know someone who just bought a plane ticket to Ibiza at the start of the season (which is round about now/beginning of May so now would be the perfect time to go) and booked a week's accommodation and then in that week went round looking for jobs. She got a bar job for the summer which included accommodation and so she was sorted and she didn't even plan anything before she went! Because the season's only just starting you'd be much more likely to get something if you just went out there than if you were going out in July or something so I'd just go for it! If you go somewhere with lots of nightlife like Ibiza, Magaluf, then you should get lucky. Even if you don't find anything you still get a holiday but I think if you go everywhere and speak to people face to face you're more likely to get a response and a job than if you e-mail or phone people. Good luck, enjoy yourself!!

For the first time since the Great Depression, Americans took more aid from govt last year than they?
Look at Greece, where the economy is in ruins. Perhaps it's important to know that over 50 percent of people with jobs in Greece work for the government, and most of them are represented by unions. Could that scene be repeated in the US

So borrowing 700 Billion from China will be better that letting the 4% tax on the upper 2% sunset as they were required (by law) to do so? The only ones calling it wealth distribution are you parrots mimicking what your gods, Beck, Rush, Hannity, and FOX say

Excuse me one second, I'm gonna go to Skid Row in Los Angeles and ask them how Capitalism is working out for them.
6 :
The spreading of the wealth began in the US in 1981. Reagan began transferring the wealth of the middle class to the billionaires. We are now in a recession because of those policies... not only of Reagan, but also by Clinton, and GW Bush as well. (George HW Bush was smarter and knew it was "Voodoo economics." But here we are. Supply side doesn't work,.... (I know most of you know that, but I was repeating it for the ignorant).
7 :
Why is it that conservatives think it's 'redistributing the wealth' to require millionaires to pay a measley 2 or 3 percent more in taxes? They're rich as hell they can afford it. If they pay slightly more than the poor and middle class than they will still be rich as hell. Dems aren't suggesting that we take away anyone's opportunity to become rich, but rich people can afford to help the country that gave them the opportunity to become rich and they should. It's ridiculous when the middle class throws a fit over things like taxing the richest 1% of Americans a tiny percentage more than the rest of us and then hold up signs protesting the estate tax. Really it just makes them all look like morons. What are cons afraid of? That someday they'll become rich and they don't want to give a fraction more in taxes when they do? Or are they afraid that some obscure, rich relative will die leaving them money and the government will get some of that loot? Seriously the only logical thing for the fuss to be about is GREED, illogical fantasy greed because the odds of most people ever becoming that rich are slim to none. There's no harm in rich people paying a tiny bit more, it's not a slippery slope, the government isn't going to see to it that a doctor makes the same as a cashier at McDonalds. And it's not going to help the economy to lower the millionaires taxes, they aren't going to piss that extra money down onto the populace and fix our economy with it. Cons should all just take a deep breath, quit being greedy, paranoid pawns for the rich and let the millionaires and billionaires help out a little so that we won't have to get rid of arts programs and require people to work until they're 69.

2 :
It's still early to say if it's working or not. Generally yes, but only because they can sit at the outside area in cafeterias for example, so they don't mind that much yet. The real problem will happen in the winter i suppose. In my town, the only time i heard about health inspectors -or whoever the government has sent for that job- was on the first week of the ban. I don't know what happens in Athens. The ban in Greece is everywhere, except streets and your house lol. Greeks, even smokers like myself, believe that the ban should happen, although there are many issues that the gov. didn't seem to consider (e.g. at shops under 75-80 sq m the smoking ban is general, but most of the shops in Greece, are small anyway, especially at the rural areas,so there is no space for smokers at all) Wait 'till winter and ask again.
3 :
I didn't know they had a smoking ban in greece,i have recently been to crete and people smoke everywhere,in the restaurants, airport, bars. There isn't a smoking ban in crete.
4 :
Even though the ban seems to be successful in workplaces (for NOW), I still can't find a non-smoking taverna, cafe or bar, because most of them fall into that 70 m2 category. They even let people smoke in bus or train station's cafes, and I don't think that should be allowed under the new law. However, it's a beginning, let's just hope it will remain that way. Banning smoking in Greece is almost an impossible task and this is already a great achievement, considering the fact that Greeks are used to smoking literally EVERYWHERE. I hope it will be enforced all the way, and not just for a few weeks or months.
5 :
well i think its working a little bit at the net cafe they made people stop smoking in there which is good

Yes. Michael, what you describe is illegal, and you should call 1142 and report it.

You should get permission to go to Pakistan first and then obtain a Greek visa at the Greece Embassy in Islamabad. The address is #22, Main ÃŒargalla Road, F-6/3 Islamabad, Pakistan. Come there and ask the embassy's officer for the information.
2 :
It should be very easy. Greece makes it practically impossible for beautiful ladies from Serbia, Russia, Ukraine, etc. to enter the country, but they rush to grant permanent visas to anyone from the 3rd world, especially muslims. They have a death wish, it seems, as the muslims will soon outnumber the native Greeks and the country will be islamicised. It helps if you come to Greece without a visa, BTW. Just pay a Turkish slave driver to bring you over in an overcrowded boat. They know the routine.

No, you don't have to become a Greek citizen. What you need in order to come here to work, which documents are necessary etc depends on which country you're coming from!
3 :
If you are a EU citizen you do not have to be Greek citizen. However, if you are from a country outside EU then things are a little complicated. The fact that you are so young can be a problem too if you do not know the language because surely however good employers you may find they will try to take advantage of you. Jobs you can look for will be mostly in the catering trade where language is a lesser problem. Waitresses and restaurant help in the touristic resorts is your best bet to suit your case.

No u don't have to become a greek citizen..if u have the EU citizenship it's enough,if not u re probably have to have a visa..i don't think u should go to greece to work though coz the wages are not good enough...livin with 600-700 euros per month while an average flat's rent is 300+100 for household costs, is not ideal.anyways try it if u like greece so much :-P

Will a work visa for Italy or Greece let me work in Spain? They are all EU countries.

Will a work visa for Italy or Greece let me work in Spain? They are all EU countries.?
Long story short, finding a company in Spain to take an American is not easy. I am not able to find anyone that will bother with the paper work and effort needed for me to obtain a work visa. They have enough citizens of Spain without jobs that they do not need to bring in Americans to take what little jobs are left. I do have friends in Italy and Greece that can offer me a position in their companies that only my talents and skills could possibly fill that would then allow me to obtain a work permit in either of those countries. Now my question is could I use the work permit from another EU country in Spain? From what I have seen online most companies require "valid EU working papers" but they do not say from Spain. But I can only assume I am missing something. Does anyone know. For personal reasons I need to be in Spain.

No, the benefits to work in any of the EU member states are only for EU citizens, as a foreigner you have to apply for a work permit in the country where you intend to work, if you move to another country, even if it's within the EU, you have to apply again. I'd suggest you to go to Italy, once you're there, things will be easier for you. They're thinking of implementing a new immigration system for all the EU so that an immigrant from one country can work in another country without a problem, but that's going to take a while. Here's a link that may help you get an idea, I tried to find a more recent article but couldn't find one. Hope it helps! http://www.bbc.co.uk/caribbean/news/story/2007/10/071023_blue_card.shtml
4 :
No, concerning tourist travel the European countries have opened up their internal borders and allow tourist to visit 25 countries on the continent on one tourist visa for up to 90 days in a 6 months period. For longer stay in a country (beyond 90 days) you will still need a national visa or residence permit for that particular country. The same applies for a work permit. A work permit issued by Italy is valid for Italy only, it cannot be used to work in Spain. The only exception is the "Van der Elst" visa which allows members of the foreign workforce of an international operating global player to be temporarily assigned to a dependency in another country. The blue card for all of Europe was a discussion of EU politicians and is off the table based on the economic situation at present. Valid EU working papers means that the applicant must have a EU citizenship with the right to work freely throughout the European Union. This is often added in job advertises since some citizens of the newly added EU member countries which joined the European Union after 2002 do not have that right in full at preseent. If you need to be in Spain you must try to find an employer in Spain willing to go through the burden of justifying why his vacancy cannot be filled on the European labor market, hard nowadays. Sorry but those are the hard facts.

Can i work in the United States if i've only studied in Greece

You can only work in the US if an employer sponsors you for a work visa. In order to get sponsored for a work visa you need to offer an useful skill and also the higher your degree is, the better. Knowing English isn't an useful skill for working in the US - most people are fluent (though websites like this make me sometimes doubt this), maybe translating between Greek and English, though I don't think there will be a lot of demand for that. Your degree from a Greek university should be accepted in the US, you probably will need to pay for some degree evaluation at some point, which however is just a formality.
2 :
To work in US, you must obtain Temporary Workers visa. To obtain Temporary Workers visa, you must have a US Employer who has to file Petition for you first. http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/types/types_1275.html
3 :
If you want to work here, you need a work visa which is obtained by getting an employer to sponsor you. Unless you are highly educated and highly skilled in a profession that is needed in the US,you aren't going to find an employer to spend thousands of dollars to be your sponsor.
4 :
Pick a visa There are basically NINE ways that you can get a visa to live and work in the US: (1) Marriage (or engagement in anticipation of marriage) to a US citizen. (2) You have skills that are in short supply in the US e.g. scientific or medical training. A degree is normally a must. Or you have superior specialist skills with at least 12 years experience. (H visas) (3) You have an Employer who is willing to transfer you - but even the employer has to make a good case for you - so you have to be a manager unless you fall under category (2) above.(L visas) (4) You may get a Green card in the diversity lottery (UK citizens, except N.Ireland, are not generally eligible unless you, your spouse or parents were born abroad or held a different citizenship. (5)You own or buy business (does not get you permanent resident status i.e. no green card)You must be a national of a qualifying Treaty countries. The business must have a minimum value of around $150k (more the better) bearing in mind you will need somewhere to live and with any startup business you will need at least 2 years living money as back up. So a figure of $350k would be a nearer minimum (E-2 visas) (6)You are an "investor" i.e. you have at least US $1m in assets to bring with you. half of that in a few areas. And your background will be investigated to the hilt. (EB-5 visas) (7)You have a close relative (mother, father, brother, sister and no further) who is an US citizen who would sponsor you, approx time this take 2-12 years? (8.The R1 visa is available to foreign members of religious denominations, having bona fide non-profit religious organizations in the U.S., for entering the U.S. to carry on the activities of a minister or religious worker as a profession, occupation or vocation (9)THE UNUSUAL You are in a position to claim refugee status/political asylum. or You get a member of Congress to sponsor a private bill with legislation that applies just to you. The S visa issued to persons who assist US law enforcement to investigate and prosecute crimes and terrorist activities such as money laundering and organized crime Recruitment agent will not take you seriously if you are not already in the US. Writing for jobs is really a waste of time; likewise US employers have no idea what foreign qualification are or mean (except Degrees) it may pay you to get your qualification translated into a US equivalent, there are Companies that do this (www.wes.org) .. But if you are getting a visa under (2) above then you need a job offer before you can get the visa. Your Employer will be your sponsor this will cost them upward of $5k. So you can see you have to be offering something really special to get considered They may also have to prove to the Dept of labor that there is no American who can do the job if the position is to be permanent © follow the flow chart http://immigrationroad.com/green-card/immigration-flowchart-roadmap-to-green-card.pdf

Ask the two that died in the fire set by radical protesters. Not so good I think. And if you want a glimpse of our future under the liberals, you're seeing it unfold in the EU.
4 :
what is not working is the right wing ideas of one european govt to eliminate borders exploit labor and spend and borrow. this is right wing buddy...just like it is in the USA.... You low information people talk about USA is going socialist when in fact for the last 30 years we have been going right wing. Dont believe me...compare today's govt stance vs union today to 30 years ago. compare trade policy, compare health care, compare the military, compare spending on infrastructure, compare the federal tax code....... you will find 30 years ago..all those policies were more liberal and today's are more right wing.

Ideas for a job in Greece

Ideas for a job in Greece?
Firstly, is it true that i need to become a Greek citizen before i can 'legally' work in Greece? What would i have to do in order to be able to work? Also, can anyone offer ideas on a job i can take which doesn't require me to speak fluent Greek? I can speak a little, but definitely no where near fluent. Thank you very much, i'm really in need of some good ideas.

No idea about the authorization to work, but you may be able to teach English as a second language.
2 :
You might want to check the legal requirements and research about it more before you go there. For instance, what are the work requirements in Greece? What kind of visa would I need? Hope this helps.

What documentation do I need to release my imported US registered car(plates and all) from Greece

What documentation do I need to release my imported US registered car(plates and all) from Greece?
ok, so I bought and registered a car in the US. It was then exported to Greece where my work moved. I was there for 3 years and now I want to bring the car back to the US. (The car was driven in Greece with US plates and registration) What documents would I need? Or how do I find what documents would I need to release the vehicle? thank you

Wondering how the vehicle has been held so that it needs to be released- maybe you are talking about reimporting it into the US. Which as greece is an EU country there is nothing to stop you exporting it from there and complying with whatever the us government/treasury want.

Should I move to Greece......Now that all of these things are happening? Please give Good Reasons Y or N

Should I move to Greece......Now that all of these things are happening? Please give Good Reasons Y or N !?
I am looking for a job in Greece or an Online Job that will allow me to move from Canada to live and work in Greece or Work from Home in Greece from my Small Town, up in the mountains. I speak Greek Fluently, but can read and write with some difficulty and I would need to address my Military Obligations (but for us Omogenis, it is only 3 months). Should I still do it, since I love Greece so so Much?

I moved from Canada to Greece some time ago, and while I miss Canada terribly i have not regret my decision. If you can find a job, Greece is an Amazing place, I cannot really find a reason not to.
2 :
Nothing to lose I suppose. Try it.
3 :
give it a shot. if u can find a job here, u'll be satisfied. come and try ur luck!
4 :
the truth is that we are not in the better place right now, financially, you know that. it depends a lot of what are you planning to do, if you are going to pay rent, and what medical insurance you are going to have. the unemployment levels have raised a lot, so you better think about it carefully. i wish all the best!
5 :
If you are serious about making the move, you need to also be fluent in reading and writing, there's no way to get around it. Before you actually make the final move, take some time off and go live in that part of greece you plan on moving to. Stay there for 5 months and see if you really can live there. It's big lifestyle change. I know I would have big trouble adjusting to it.
6 :
I am not so sure you would like to live there permanently. Stay in Canada, as you are in much more secure and more beautiful environment. Greece is nice only over the summer and the living standards are much lower than in the land of maple leaf. The one who is recommending Greece as being better than Canada is not telling you the whole truth. Some migrating birds told me - he would never go back to Greece to live in....if it wasn't for the deportation order.
7 :
I hope you are joking. Every greek wants to get away from this hell and you want to go??? I myself am a Greek and as much as I love greece and I miss the food, the weather and my friends and family I moved to the UK. You should just wait till things get better. There is no possibility of you finding a job there. All businesses are either closing or facing extreme difficulties. Big companies are getting out a there. With the taxes on all products on 22% everything costs as gold and if you buy a house you should know that it will keep on losing its value for some time. Not to mention that the political system is failing and that the crime rate has tripled in a year... I know that greece is paradise on earth and a god given beauty but we managed to transform it to the hell that is today. Once you could bring ash and make it gold, now whatever you bring will turn into ash... Sorry to say that but unless someone who really loves greece takes over there is no way that it is worth living there, just for vacation :((((
8 :
The best way to find out if you can manage this big change is to make an experiment and then decide on you own. Visit Greece, for a few months, try it, find a job and then decide. Greece is an awesome place with it's advantages and disadvantages. Nothing more or less. And yes, it's true that we have financial problems, but it's not true that this will lead you to disaster as some people claimed. Disaster is only a matter of perception. You decide what disaster means for your life. For example you have the opportunity to pass through your military obligations in three months only! Who else has this privilege? Not to mention your other privilege: your language. If you come here you'll learn better than now to read and write. If you don't come you may forget what you already know. :( It's not wise to forget your knowledge ESPECIALLY since you can do this experiment for a few months. I suggest to give it a shot!
9 :
Me and my Greek man are seriously thinking of moving from UK to Greece too. We are concerned about the financial crisis that we hear a lot in the media, but every time we are going to Greece we sure don't see any financial crisis, all we see is Greeks enjoying life to the fullest. One way or another, truth is that most countries every now and then, go through politic and economic crisis, so the only sure thing is, that even if there is a financial crisis now, it will be gone one day soon or later. Now the beauty of the Greek land, the sun and the blue water of this country, the beaches, the islands, the passion and hospitality of the Greek people, the history and the culture, the monuments, the great food and so many other great things about this great country, won't go anywhere, it has all been there for some thousand years now. Move to Greece.
10 :
R U kidding??/ why would you leave the security of Canada...good jobs and health care...you live in one of the best countries in the world....spend 6 months at home and 6 months in Greece...and have yourself the BEST of Both ..

Best to cheque it with a Greek embassy in your native country. I don´t believe you can go there just because your wife has a visa. Of course you can visit Greece if you have a passport or whatever documents you need. As I don´t know which country you come from, I can´t give you any better advice, but to contact a travel agency or a Greek embassy. Good luck!
2 :
Having a working visa does not give her the citizen's right to invite a spouse in. The best thing she can do, is to get someone to invite you for a specific work position, but i can not see that as remotely possible. When the unemployment number is quite high, the invitation request will not be processed in a great hurry, if at all. Only a very specialized person may be in a speedier process for work visa.

If i were transported back to ancient Greece, what would I be able to do for work

If i were transported back to ancient Greece, what would I be able to do for work?
just like the title says, what would i be able to do for work, besides slavery, that would utilize some of the skills learned in modern culture? are there any simple inventions I could invent a few hundred years early? evas, vomitoriums are the hallways which you use to leave a large theater or colliseum. people, like yourself, often believe they were rooms which romans used to actually vomit after feasting. you should have paid attention in class.

3 :
Prostitute yourself.. There were many whores in ancient Greece, both Women and young boys. Best of all sice you can't use up what you are selling you can sell it forever.
4 :
Which part of ancient Greece did you have in mind? If you were going to be an Athenian, you could have any number of professions, but no matter which one you chose you still had to serve in the military should someone come knocking on your door. Trades to pick from: Potter Blacksmith Farmer/Rancher Carpenter Ship builder Teacher Lawmaker Doctor (more likely surgeon, medicine was pretty crude back then). Artist/Philosopher If you were going to be a Spartan you had limited choices, depending on your age you were either a statesman (elder), a slave (gathered wheat, cleaned the stables, etc.), or a soldier...and that's it. Sparta is known for being a very harsh city state, no comforts, no focus on the arts or philosophy.

What kinds of craftmen worked in ancient Greece

What kinds of craftmen worked in ancient Greece?
What kinds of trades did the ancient Greeks have? I know there were potters, but what other kinds of craftsmen were there? Thanks!

Architects, stone masons, artists, musicians, absolutely great playwrights, actors, shipbuilders, potters, carpenters, blacksmiths, metal foundries, leather craftsmen, shoemakers, brewers and vintners, sculptors, scribes.... they were the first "modern" people.
2 :
Greek Blacksmiths Blacksmiths used bronze, and later iron ore, to create swords, plows, axes, and other tools. They used billows made of animal skin to blow air into their fires to produce the heat needed to work with the metal. After heating the metal, they used hammers to shape it into a weapon or a tool. Greek Marble Quarrying Athenians used marble in their construction of temples on the Acropolis. Marble was dug up from quarries. In the quarries, holes were drilled in the rock in a straight line. Wooden wedges were placed into the holes. The wood was then watered to make it expand. The expanding wood broke the rock in a straight line. Craftsmen in Ancient Greece Most shops in ancient Greece were small and family run. Some had a few slaves along with the family members working. Some shops had ten to thirty workers. One armory in Athens employed 120 workers, but this was a rare exception. Craftsmen could specialize in their work depending on the size of the city where they worked. In a smaller community a woodworker may make beds, plows, and doorframes. In a larger city, craftsmen specialized in making only one product. Bankers in Ancient Greece Bankers had a vital role in ancient Greece. They changed money from other city-states into local currency. They often loaned money for trading voyages. The rates of their loans varied based on the risk involved in the proposed venture. Doctors and Medicine in Ancient Greece Medicine during the time of the ancient Greeks was limited in its ability to cure diseases. The field of medicine combined science and religious beliefs. The ancient Greeks believed that sickness was brought on by an imbalance in four substances known as “humors.” The four humors were blood, yellow bile, black bile, and phlegm. Those who practiced medicine drew blood and induced vomiting or sweating to bring the four humors back into balance. Farming in Ancient Greece Farming in ancient Greece was difficult due to the limited amount of good soil and cropland. It is estimated that only twenty percent of the land was usable for growing crops. The main crops were barley, grapes, and olives. Greek Fishermen There is clear evidence that the Greeks had a large amount of fish in their diets. The Greeks had no refrigeration systems, so the fish had to be eaten before the meat spoiled. Fishermen brought fresh catches into the agora to sell. The poorer Greeks could only afford, little fish, such as anchovies and sapts. The wealthy could afford tuna, sea bass, and red mullet. Eel was considered the greatest fish delicacy in ancient Greece. Greek Market Trader Many traders set up small stalls in the agora, where they sold goods produced in their shops. The stalls were made of reeds and were probably very hot and dusty. Normally, similar products were sold in the same area of the agora. Farmers would also bring their items to sell in the agora. Greek Merchants Merchants were traders in ancient Greece. They owned boats or rented cargo space on other boats. Merchants, known as metrics, were often foreigners. A metric did not have the same rights as a citizen of a city-state. Shipping involved a number of risks such as pirates, shipwrecks, or the cargo going bad. Shipping also had good profit possibilities, so many took the risk. Mining in Ancient Greece The Greeks used bronze, a mix of tin and copper, for their weapons and tools. Later, iron was used because it produced harder tools and weapons. Athens found a large amount of silver in the mines at Laurium. At its peak, Athens had over 20,000 slaves mining at Laurium. At the request of Themistocles, they used the money from these mines to pay for a large navy. This investment in the navy paid off in their development of a large trade network around the Mediterranean. Teachers in Ancient Greece Teachers in ancient Greece only educated boys. Girls were educated at home by their mothers. Boys from well-to-do families were sent to school around the age of seven. In Sparta, boys at the age of seven were sent to a city-run military school and stayed in the barracks. In other city-states, each boy was accompanied by a slave called a paidogogos. The slave’s job was to insure the child’s good behavior. A grammatist taught reading, writing, and simple math. For education in music, a ketharistes taught his students how to play the lyre and an instrument that resembled the oboe. An instructor called a palaestra taught physical education. Most evidence suggests that teachers were poorly paid in early Greece, and they had a low status in society. ===== This should give you some idea of the careers that could be followed in Ancient Greece. I hope this is helpful.

Minimum living cost in Greece for one person

Minimum living cost in Greece for one person?
I am coming Greece in work permit visa. Can any one tell me the minimum living cost in Greece for one person

On the islands - nothing. The land and the sea can support down to earth life without any great difficulties. Even the tobacco and the alcohol can be home-made. And in the cities? Lots! For more than 30 % of the population, life in the cities did become an every day struggle to learn - how to live with 200 euro per week when at least 300 euro p/w is needed. PS. If you like to live in the Ghettos together with poor Albanians and black refugees, than yes - the Air-hole estimates will be correct.
2 :
A modest apartment in a non expensive neighborhood will be about 350 €. Electricity, phone and water supply should be another 100-150 €. Food will be about 20 € per day. Other expenses another 200€ ? Since you are coming with a working permit it means that you have already found a job and most likely it must be highly paid in some special field. That in turn means that you can afford the above expenses. If that is not the case, then good luck to you.
3 :
the prices that Airpole gave are almost true with 350 in a downgraded area you can also find a big house, with that amount you can find in a mediocre area a 1bedroom apartment. In the rent money you got to add at least 50 euros for condo fees (during summer) and that price goes up during winter for heating too(that price depends from the price of petrolium and it's not fixed). 20 euros per day for food is reasonable if you eat out every day, if you eat at home that price goes down extremely much. If you will use a car, have in mind that you will need about 50-60 euros every week for gas.
4 :
It depends on the place. But in general i would say Food:7-10 euros per day,if you choose to cook or eating cheap food. Accommodation:From 300-350 euro in a decent but not expensive area + 100 euros for water, phone, electricity etc. Other expenditures:From 70 euros per month. Total:Around 700 euros.

Well, if they all had nice teeth it would be a miracle. ;) I don't know how deeply you looked into people's mouth, but some Greeks have horrible teeth. And of course, many have lovely teeth, but certainly some of those could be fake. And greece might be the number one place for vegetables, but Greeks also eat a lot of sweets, croissants and pasta, true?
2 :
Of course people in Greece have crowns when it is necessary. I have one and I'm about to have another one. You know, except of vegetables, in Greece you can find very tasty swites.
3 :
Yes in Greece we have crowns and veneers and some good dentists. Telling the truth in my family both from my mother's site and father's, everybody has nice strong teeth, maybe it's the DNA. But many people suffer from dental problems. Very positive it's the fact that still in many places of Greece the drinking water is very good with lots of minerals. And l am happy to notice that more people are taking care of their dental health nowadays.
4 :
Most tv personalities, singers and models have veneers but the 'average Joe' in Greece have awful teeth - worst that Brits!! and that's saying something! My brother-in-law's were so bad that the dentist had to remove ALL and he's 42! The older the person the less they were educated on dental hygiene. Thankfully schools are trying to instill the need for kids to learn and go to the dentist! My daughter told me she was the only kid that put her hand up to the 'Do you brush your teeth daily?' question!!!! (She's 8) Greeks eat loads of sweet things!! Loaded with sugar! Also going to the dentist can be a nightmare - the IKA dentists .. you have to wait for hours and the private ones cost an arm and a leg!
5 :
really so u ask people while u walk around greece " hey do u got crowns?" not all crowns r silver u know some are white and bland nicely with the color of teeth

You should be paying taxes in Greece. No need to file again in the US if you are already paying. But do get advice on this.
2 :
Yes, you're supposed to be filing taxes. But you can get a credit for the taxes you pay in Greece.
3 :
If you don't live or work here even though you are a citizen why would you pay taxes here?
4 :
Yes, you should file as US citizens owe tax based on worldwide income without regard to residency. It is unlikely that you owe anything, but it is worth checking as the rules on credit for foreign earnings got tightened recently. Most US embassies keep lists of local preparers with US experience. You might want to ask them for a list (although it will not be a recommendation).
5 :
As an American citizens, you're obligated to file an annual return and pay federal taxes on your "worldwide income" regardless of where you earned it. You will be in trouble if you stated that you only filed your return once in a couple of years. The IRS will be looking for those missing tax returns. Since you were out of the country for 12 years, it sounds like you may have established a tax home abroad which qualifies you for Form 2555, Foreign Income Exclusion, which would exclude a portion of your income from abroad. This would only apply to income during the years you were outside of the US. If you paid any taxes to foreign goverments, you may also qualify for Form 1116, Foreign Tax Credit, which would give you a tax credit for the foreign taxes paid against your US taxes. If you move back into the US (i.e. considered an Ex-Pat), then you "may" lose your foreign tax home consideration and all income earned in the US would now be subject to tax. You should consult with a local tax professional or tax attorney (that is aware of these foreign income tax treatments) to assist you.
6 :
I can't add much to the previous answer except that you must file your returns in order to secure the benefits that are described there. You may be subject to penalties for nonfiling regardless of your tax liability. And yes, as a citizen, you are definitely required to file.

Im in the Navy and do ALOT of travelling, your american cell phone wont work at all unless you find a cell phone store or someplace "underground" who can unlock the phone for you so you can use the local nations cell phone towers. It isn't always cheap to have this done so if you wouldn't want to tamper with your phone, I suggest buying a cheap unlocked phone with a prepaid sim card (the sim card will have s set number of minutes and can be used anywhere including the USA) the sim card normally costed us between $7-$15 USD and has more minutes that you can use. Hope it helps...
2 :
My friend went to Spain last year with a Tmobile phone...her phone had multi band capability. Without that, you are out of luck, but her Tmobile, I think, covered it. Call your provider, and make sure everything is in place before you leave.
3 :
you could do that, or you could just buy a phone card. or, just buy a cheap international cell when you're there. i just use an international cell that i got at walgreens.
4 :
Go to t-mobile with your phone, and ask them to unlock it. When you get to Greece (I assume you're flying into Athens) as soon as you go through the customs line, and get outside the doors, look to your right. You will see a store called GERMANOS. Go there and tell them you need a Greek sim card. They will put it in for you, and you will have a Greek phone number for your phone!! (They deal only with Vodaphone and Cosmote.) You can also buy prepaid time for your phone. When you need more minutes, you can buy them at any Germanos shop or even a periptero, which is very convenient!!

Our cruelty never goes unpunished. What we sow, so we shall reap. Are you sure you want to report this worker??... then get in touch with the immigration department. Edit: please also remember that the company will be fined a substantial sum for employing him/her, so may not be too happy either.
5 :
There is no site to report something like that. Since you don't live in Greece you need to call the police department of the area where the illegal immigrant works and report to them what you just stated. They will ask certain data from you such as who are you, where you live etc just to make sure you are seriously reporting this.

Yes, it will work on wifi and may hotels and other businesses offer free access.
2 :
Course not. We have no electricity or any WiFi connections since last riots ! Only Red Cross shelter centres have that achievements.
3 :
Ignore the jester. It will work almost everywhere. I have 3 of them.
4 :
Yes, and some places with internet access will let you stay on the internet for hours for the price of a beer or a soft drink. I've even been known to quickly check my email on my ipod touch while walking by a place with access.
5 :
There's no ipod touch in Greece. We use the magical gayreek touch. It's about grabbing the ass of someone from the same sex.
6 :
Dont worry it will works !!!
7 :
Not sure about that stuff here.
8 :
What is an ipod? never heard of it. Native Greek and proud.

If I buy an electric device from the us and plug it in in greece will it work? If not can I do something

If I buy an electric device from the us and plug it in in greece will it work? If not can I do something?
is there a device that transforms the voltage?

1 :
No it will not work. You use 110 we use 220 volts. A transformer will be needed unless what you buy is already for 220 volts. Or it can be used on both, in that case attention should be paid to use it with the 220 option.
2 :
You can buy transformers reasonably cheaply at many electronics stores, luggage shops, and travel goods shops in airports. Sometimes you can even buy them from the duty free shop right on the airplane. Be careful to buy a transformer, if your appliances are not 220 volt, not an adaptor. The latter is ok if you have dual voltage appliances and just need to adapt the plug size.
3 :
You will need a transformer to change the input voltage and a socket adapter for US-Europe, (or just buy a plug from a hardware store and get an electrician to change it for your)
4 :
We have not enough electricity after the recent riots. Blackouts are our presence. So find some aggregate first.
5 :
Greece is an unplugged country. Candels only.
6 :
Visit some marmango saloon. Find some nude Grek boy. Very cheap.

forget him. he dont value ur relation. and now no body value his relation. tit for tat. so pls dont go with him. because he isnt faithful.
2 :
He's your ex. Why you crying? Maybe that's why he's leaving...to get away from you. I'm not being mean but some guys are like that. Don't be all clingy. This is the best thing that could ever happen to you. The man of your dreams awaits. He won't come if you don't let this nut go.
3 :
He is your ex and the end is already here. He is your ex or not ? Time will help you forget him. Nothing you can do if he opted to leave.
4 :
wow so u want to "keep " him but yet u dont trust the fact that you can make it a year with out him??? so obviously you dont believe in your relationship, so basically the relationship will eventually die any ways whether he stays or goes, because if u really thought he was the "one" , then a year a part wouldnt be the "end all" for u .. a year out of 50 (if he was the one) would seem like nothing to a life time together.. so since u cant handle it, its better to let him go and set him free then continuing to waste this guys time since u cant trust him, or his love for u..
5 :
My guess is that his being your "ex" is half the reason he's going to Greece. How to make him stay? If he's your "ex," you can't make him do anything. Actually, you can't make anyone do anything, but sometimes a relationship can be close enough to be a persuasion to the person to change. You would need to obtain an actual relationship with the person, not be a mere "ex," to do that. It looks like you'll remain separated.

Why should I treat this as urgent? I don't know what textfree is and I don't care if it works in Turkey or Greece. I'm not going to Turkey or Greece anytime soon and I don't use textfree. LOL I'm only joking, but seriously DILLIGAF?
2 :
Yes, as long as you have wifi.
3 :
Make sure the textfree is really free and not with hidden charges.

If I buy a business in greece, do I still need a work visa

If I buy a business in greece, do I still need a work visa?
I really want to get out of the states. Greece is amazing, visited crete years ago and loved it. I want to buy a cafe/bar there. If im leasing property in greece what steps do I need to take, permits, visa, etc.?

Why not do a simple google search on "greece immigration laws" ?
2 :
Visa is not required for USA citizens, but if you plan to work then work permit will be in order. If you plan, as you say, to buy a business here , then the lawyer who will undertake the legal part of the whole transaction can also arrange to apply for the permit too.

Working in the Construction Industry in Greece

Working in the Construction Industry in Greece?
I have a friend who is finding it difficult to obtain a work Visa for Greece to work in the construction Industry. Can someone please let me know that if his Fathers parents are Italian and he has family in Italy does this make things easier for him to obtain a working Visa? Apparently they issue only around 2000amount, and all to the senior guys who the Greeks feel will grow the Greek economy and who cannot be found within Greece/Europe. Any information is helpful! Thanks He was born in Australia and is based in Australia still at this time.

You do not state his current citizenship. That i s what counts to start with. If you mean as a labouring hand then it can be a little difficult on account that many of the foreigners that came to Greece as economic refugees are working on that field. As a certified contraction mechanic , engineer or architect he has to undergo examinations so that his diploma can be recognised and then he has to join the Engineers Guild to be fully accepted. In an already great abundance of both proffesionals it is not easy to obtain work but not difficult to get in as an illegal worker. You have to give more information on what exactly you are looking and surely are people here of that particular field that they can give you all the details. To get recognised as a EU citizen he has to see at the Italian embassy with proof of his lineage and family relations. Although that is not absolute proof it will certainly help.

Does an unlocked U.S. Blackberry Pearl work with Greek carriers

Does an unlocked U.S. Blackberry Pearl work with Greek carriers?
I recently bought a T-Mobile Blackberry Pearl. And I want to know if it would work in Greece, if unlocked. Would it work if I unlocked it and then put in a Vodafone/Cosmote/WIND SIM card?

no it does not

There is a possibility that it might work, since Cosmote and Wind Greece carry the Pearl. But there might be a problem if you want to access the Internet and send MMS messages. Well good luck.

How many months is a woman in Greece allowed to get off from work after she gives birth?

http://www.cepr.net/documents/publications/parental_2008_09.pdf Paid maternity leave in Greece, according to that article at least, is around 34 weeks. I don't see what her being Greek American has to do with it though. Unless she's working in America. In which case, she won't get anywhere near that amount of time.
2 :
Forget the law. My cousin was pregnant, she saw 4 months of salary when she gave birth. It's nothing like North America.
3 :
Some laws about maternity : •You can't be fired while you are pregnant •You have the right to change shift if you are working night shifts, to day-shifts.If this is impossible (for techical reason), you can't stop working (without being fired i mean) •You can't work, if you have to visit your doctor, for pre-birth exams •Your maternity get-off is at-least 17 weeks. •For 30 months months, after you give birth, (counting for the day you return to job, after giving birth) you can decide on of those -Leave 1 hour earlier each day -Leave 2 hours aerlier each day for 1 year, and 1 hour earlier for 6 months. (same applies for adopted parents of a kid, till 6 y.o) Dimosio: • 5 months off (two before and 3 after) giving birth (full-payment) •You can also take a special vacation, if you are exhausted, after doctors perscription about it. •2 less working hours per day for kids up to 2, and 1 less hour for kids 2 to 4.
